What is Waxoyl?

We've probably all heard of it at some stage, but what exactly is Waxoyl?
Waxoyl is a liquid which can be applied to surfaces to prevent rust. It is most commonly used on the under side of vehicles where dirt and moisture are present a lot of the time, but can also be applied inside body panels and other areas around the vehicle. These areas include, inside door panels, door pillars, wheel arches and more.

Waxoyl works by creating a barrier between the vehicle and moisture or dirt, but also uses a 'special ingredient' to inhibit rust and tackle existing bad spots. It comes as a waxy, oily mixture which can be sprayed using a Waxoyl spray gun.

Should I Use Waxoyl?

Waxoyl can leave quite a ruff, not too attractive texture where it has been sprayed, which often leads to people being in two minds about using the stuff. Also many people are unsure as to when to apply Waxoyl. Do I add it to clean new metal? Or is it only needed for places where rust has already set in?

The truth of it is, Waxoyl will prolong your vehicles life, no matter when you spray it on, so long as you prepare the surface correctly. I applying to a newly painted surface, then you are adding another barrier between the vehicle which is always a good thing. If you are applying to already rusted areas, you are not only creating a barrier but also preventing the rust spreading as quickly.

Preparation

Waxoyl will do no good if you don't prepare the surface correctly.

  1. Wash the area you are about to spray so it is free from dirt / oil etc.
  2. Use a wire brush to remove any flakes of rust or loose paint.
  3. Wash the area again.
Application

  1. Leave the tin of Waxoyl standing in hot water for around 30 mins. Basically you want the stuff to be able to flow freely and not clog the sprayer. You can also add roughly 10% of white spirit to thin the Waxoyl to help it flow if your using the Waxoyl sprayer.
  2. Spray a light coat (I'd say around 2-3mm is sufficient, you don't want the vehicle completely plastered!) all over the surface.
  3. Feed the end of the sprayer into pillar holes and slowly draw back the nozzle to get good coverage inside hard to reach area.
  4. That's it! your all done...
A few tips...

  1. It's a good idea to have some boiling water to send through the sprayer when your done to clear out the wax inside. Otherwise the next time you go to use it, you'll find it has jammed up pretty good.
  2. It's a good idea to wear a pair of gloves and a face mask when using Waxoyl. The stuff can be a bit harsh on your skin and lungs.
And that's about it. If you want to know a bit more about Waxoyl they have made a few videos to help you which can be watched below.
